August 2008

Dear Kids,

Yeah I've blown it again here seeing how it's almost the middle of September and all, so I guess I need to hunker down and get this little update out the door.

I'm not sure the best way to say this but I am now 39 years old. It's really hard to believe this but I guess that it's a fact of life what with the getting older and stuff. The good thing is that I really am so incredibly happy and feel so incredibly blessed. You kids and mom are so much fun to be with and you have no idea how much joy you bring to my soul. I pray that someday you'll know how I feel.

We finally began our long anticipated landscaping project by tearing out part of the old driveway and installing a new slab in it's place. We hired some nice guys to do it for really cheap and from what I gather they did a nice job...except for when one of them hit our van and dislodged the bumper. Next up: foundation repair.

We've had a pretty eventful summer and for some reason all our fun came to a screaming halt come August 1st. Really, we didn't do too much...just hung out on the porch a bunch, watched the Olympics, tried to cool off when we could and just overall enjoyed being together. Outside. In the shade. When it wasn't too hot.

So yeah, it was kind of boring. But nice.

RUBY-
The big news for you is that you now are sleeping in a big kid bed. Your mom and I made a mad dash out to Draper and purchased you a twin sized bed frame at IKEA. Mom thought this through and declared that a toddler bed was a waste of money for us. We talked about taking the plunge into purchasing bunk beds but opted to hold off on that for a while. For a bit you'd keep asking us about "bunker beds" and would suggest that we buy you one. It was pretty darn cute.

Anyway, as of this writing we keep expecting to hear the sounds of a toddler landing on the floor in the middle of the night, but so far you've done really well. You've managed to stay in there pretty good.

We're not sure if it's the new bed, but lately you've developed a fear of a mysterious turtle that scares you at night. On more than one occasion your mom and I have had to scare it away and sleep in your bed with you to ensure that it won't come back. I have to admit that you are pretty entertaining at 4am as what little logic you do have is completely gone.

Maybe this turtle is a product of the swim lessons you took this month. Your little friend Eli signed up for them and mom thought it'd be both fun and beneficial for you to take swim lessens as well. Some days you did really well while other days you'd clam up and wouldn't talk to anyone or do anything. By the end of the class you'd put your face into the water and would blow bubbles and even go so far as to immerse yourself under the water all by yourself.

You've become completely obsessed with popsicles over the summer. You're mom makes them by blending a smoothie and then dropping them into the mold and freezing them up good. Over the last week or so the first request of the day is "I want a popsicle" when I'm changing you out of your wet night diaper. It's as if you know that summer is almost over and that popsicle season will be going away for a while and that you simply must get all the popsicles in that you can.

It's probably worth mentioning that you are now beginning to put letters together and are phonically connecting those dots. You have always loved books and the ritual that goes along with them. Now it's fun to have you "read" your mom and I stories. I'm amazed with your memory and your ability to roughly guide us through books we've read to you, sometimes after only one reading.

You continue to clown around like nobody's business, especially at meal time. You've discovered some of the standard tricks kids like to play. Hopefully this won't rub off on Henry too much, but I have my doubts. The two of you are forming a team that will put your mom and I's patience to the test.

HENRY-
I am finally happy to report that you are now mobile. We're not exactly sure of the date and time, but it was sometime right after Lake Powell. We think that you just got tired of watching everybody else moving around and having a good old time and it was about time for you to join the fun.

You have this unique little crawl where you push with your left leg and let your right knee connect with the ground. You'd think that this would make you go around in circles, but you seem to make it work and are able to go in a straight line and get to your new object.

You are also now pulling yourself up all by yourself and are in the early stages of crabbing. We practice your walking with you and hold you by your arms above your head. You've got a nice little strut/march that you do that is wildly entertaining. Mom is placing odds that you will be walking by Christmas, just in time to keep us on extra high alert especially around the Christmas tree.

Henry, your mom is infatuated with you. She always kind of has been, but it seems like the volume gets turned up just about every day now. I'm getting a little worried about you turning into a momma's boy, especially when I come home and find you all gussied up like a little girl. Looks like you are defenseless with Ruby and Mom controlling just about every move you make.

It's hard to believe that you'll almost be a year old, although you've always passed for being a little older than what you look like. I guess that it's the Campbell gene pool in you...the one that makes us look older than we really are. According to some people I've been in my 30's for about twenty years now.

Alright then kiddo's...football season is upon us and I'm excited to take both of you to your first game (Go Utes!) sometime here this next month. Also, we need to get our yard finished up. The dead grass and possibilities are driving me mad.

Love,
Dad
