The Monster Waits II

I had no idea that friend internet blog superstar Heather would link me when I posted about my brush with Tom (notice the pretentious first name-drop). I actually wrote this essay/story for my writing class Writing for New Media and I feel a little embarrassed that this encounter reached such a mass audience. Thanks for all the kind comments, words of encouragement and personal emails sent my way. I now feel compelled to tell the rest of the story as it wasn’t nearly as tragic as it was obviously perceived.

Since I really should be doing my homework right now I’ll have to tell the rest of the story in speedy Powerpoint-bullet fashion. So here goes:

• I did end up recording with Tom (again with the pretense) on Tin Hat Trio’s album, Helium. The song is called Helium Reprise and it was mostly written by my good friend Mark (1/3 of the Trio). I wasn’t in the studio when Tom was there, but I still have the album credit. As a side note I also recorded a song with Willie Nelson on another Tin Hat Trio album called The Rodeo Eroded. The song is the classic, Willow Weep for Me.

• I spent an evening with Tom and his wife Kathleen when I played with Danny Cohen one night at Doc’s Clock in the Mission. My buddy Ralph Carney hooked me up on the gig as Danny was trying to get a record deal with Tom’s label Anti. Tom and Kathleen were there to lend support. It was a funny night as the Anti people never showed up and Danny spent about 1/3 of the gig tuning his guitar as he was full of both nerves and neurosis. When we did play I could see Tom checking out what I was doing as I wasn’t using a conventional drumset and played some of my handmade percussion toys. The room was chuck-full of hipsters and Tom was checkin’ me out…pretty cool. Oh yeah, we (Tom, Kathleen, Danny, Ralph and I) also had dessert at Bruno’s earlier in the night. You can read my friend Beth Lisick's account of the night here. So, yeah.

• It has also occurred to me that not playing on Mule Variations ultimately led me to move back to Utah where I met and married the most beautiful Rebecca, own a charming old bungalow where I dwell and am now the proud father of li'l princess Ruby.

Honestly, I’d have it no other way. As a man, I am complete and fulfilled. I am truly blessed and absolutely love my life.

Happiness is good, right?
